ICE Software, along with instantly pricing out the whole project, immediately feeds factory sizes, cuts and part information for every custom design. With this instant pricing, every client immediately knows how much everything will cost. If the price exceeds the budget, Smartt can instantly change the needed pieces and price out again within hours.

DIRTT also speeds up construction by delivering the electrical sockets in the DIRTT walls before it hits the site. So, when the assembly begins it’s basically “plug and play”. The electrician can be in and out within one day. This is just another way that you save on costs. With the electrical already being placed, it should take an electrician no more than a few days to connect every wire.

With the modular walls being completely assembled, they are all shipped to the site to be placed. The installation is yet again another sped up process. The DIRTT wall installs without material waste and on a schedule that is a fraction of studs and dry wall.

In the recent issue of Building Design and Construction Magazine, the use of modular interior construction is making a major impact in healthcare construction. In a world where the goal is high value and low cost, and yet there is a major need need for flexibility and acceptance of new technology, pre-engineered, modular solutions from patient rooms to observation units are creating spaces that are sustainable, flexible and financially make sense to hospital administrators.

The article highlights Detroit Medical Center’s recent 29 bay observation unit using DIRTT modular walls and power. It was a renovation of a 5,800 sf physiotherapy space. It featured customized headwall design using DIRTT and pre-installed medical gasses.

Imagine designing future flood relief protection by using modular interior construction techniques in your upcoming building or remodeling project. That’s exactly what happened to a Government client who used DIRTT walls in their new space. It’s the classic tale of floods and relief.

“Our Government client experienced a two-foot wave of water in their newly built teleconference room. At first, the relief was due to the design of the DIRTT Walls in the space. They figured they’d just have to remove and replace the bottom tiles of the face-mounted walls. Upon inspection, while the drywall walls all had to be destroyed and removed, even the bottom tiles of the DIRTT walls withstood the flood. And because the walls didn’t wick water up – the televisions integrated into the DIRTT Walls were undamaged. As expected, the access floor was ruined by the water and had to be replaced but the DIRTT walls were disassembled, stored and re-installed once flooring was replaced.” – DIRTT Environmental Solutions

The allure of a modular solution to interior construction is typically the idea that in the future, when change needs to happen, you can move the walls. However, at first investigation into modular interior construction, many businesses and organizations ask themselves, will I want to move them? The Smartt Interior Construction team traveled to Chicago in June to attend the unveiling of DIRTT’s Green Learning Center, featuring it’s 2011 innovations in the world of sustainable, aesthetic, high performance workplaces and healthcare environments. “We were blown away” says Smartt Co-owner Mike Gallagher, “DIRTT’s integration of technology and out-of-the-box thinking in the world of healthcare, really showcased what’s possible by using a flexible and sustainable solution like DIRTT.”

DIRTT’s partner companies including Wahu Caseworks and Spider Agile Technology were also unveiling their new innovations. “Wahu’s modular casework featured details you just don’t see with traditional millwork” said Paula Klein, Project Champion and Co-owner of Smartt. “From drawers with interior lighting inside them, so you don’t have to wake-up the patient, to solid surface Corian being used to eliminate seams for infection-control, Wahu is continuing to bring new ideas to the table” notes Klein.

Besides attending the unveiling of DIRTT’s Green Learning Center, the Smartt leadership team also attended DIRTT’S Distribution Partner annual meeting and training event where the Smartt team learned about some exciting things coming from DIRTT, Wahu and Spider. Stay Tuned…….
